MARITIME POLICY & EMISSIONS TRADING : MEPS WANT INCLUSION OF MARITIME TRANSPORT IN ETS.

Is the integrated maritime policy that the European Commission intends to put in place not ambitious enough? This is the opinion of the European Parliament which, on the occasion of a report adopted on 20 May in Strasbourg, asks for more concrete measures from the Commission. MEPs deplore, in particular, the too relaxed approach to the challenges posed by climate change. The report - drafted by Willi Piecyk (PES, Germany) - was adopted by a large majority: 587 votes for and 20 against.

It particularly targets the transport sector. Firstly, MEPs call for the inclusion of maritime transport in the European Emission Trading Scheme (ETS), just as the Commission proposes for aviation. They also ask the Commission to be more ambitious in the fight against nitrogen...
