Youth block grant okayed by key Senate committee.

The Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources has approved the Youth Development Block Grant program that would replace several other programs and provide formula block grant funding to counties. The funding would be intended for youth services and development.

Legislation that would swap funding for 22 categorical programs (including all 1994 Anti-Crime Law prevention programs) for a formula block grant to counties, has been approved by the Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee by 9-7 vote along party line. It is possible that this bill could replace provisions in the pending Senate anti-crime bill that would provide municipal elected officials with direct federal funding and total flexibility in the design of community-specific prevention programs....
