The US Senate appropriated almost $500 million for the Local Law Enforcement Block Grant Program (LLEGB), which provides federal aid to safety initiatives that are specific to cities. Amendments that somewhat erode the program are discussed.
Local governments scored a victory last week as the Senate appropriated nearly $500 million for the Local Law Enforcement Block Grant Program (LLEGB), a top NLC priority Some funding was wiped out by amendments put forth by Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.), but the bulk of the funding remains. The block grant's funding is part of the 1998 Commerce, Justice Appropriations bill.
One amendment, sponsored by Sen. Kerry would reduce the LLEBG by $10 million to cover the cost of renewing grants originally...
