Senator Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) last week introduced legislation that would authorize the Local Law Enforcement Block Grant (LLEBG) program for the next five years and raise the funding level to $750 million each year - a significant increase over this years $523 million. The bill does, however, propose a change in the funding formula for local grant distribution.

In his statement introducing S. 1893, Sen. DeWine said, "I believe the best way for the federal government to help local communities fight crime is to return more money to those communities, because in the final analysis, it is they who will get the job done."

The bill follows current law in most ways. Grants would be direct-funded to cities, towns and counties. Current funding purposes...
