Congress begins response to Hurricane Katrina.

The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina has spurred a number of Congressional actions, including more than $60 billion in emergency spending packages for the Gulf Coast region.

These actions could have an impact on the Congressional calendar for the next several weeks and months.

Emergency aid is just the first step in what will become an unprecedented amount in disaster funding for relief and rebuilding efforts on the Gulf Coast. Area residents are in urgent need of housing, health care, roads, sewers and drinking water.

Eduction of displaced children and emergency access to food stamps and welfare benefits also need to be addressed.
