Revamped FEMA expected to improve UASI grant process.(Federal Emergency Management Agency, Urban Area Security Initiative)

The congressionally mandated overhaul of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) promises improvements in programs for local governments, including grants to larger cities under the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI). Under the reorganization, FEMA now will administer emergency management and terrorism grants to local governments. Guidelines for the grant program were the responsibility of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in past years.

The revamped DHS, with more state and local functions moved to FEMA, was unveiled last month. DHS continues to implement the changes ordered by Congress following Hurricane Katrina.
