House Subcommittee boosts funding for transportation, housing programs important to cities.

Last week, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies (THUD) approved by voice vote its fiscal year 2008 funding bill. The subcommittee has often supported city priorities regardless of the party in power, and this year is no exception. Funding for programs important to cities such as the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, the HOPE VI program for public housing, and funding for Amtrak were all boosted despite the President's recommendation for reduced funding.
Subcommittee leaders chose to "make the core programs whole and make them function better," rather than spending resources on many new initiatives.
