Senate passes Amtrak reauthorization.

Last week the Senate voted 70-22 in support of S. 294, the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act of 2007 (PRIIA). The bill would reauthorize Amtrak and provide $11.4 billion for the rail system over the next six years.
The Senate passed several amendments to the bill, including a voice vote on a package of amendments that included a provision by Sen. Christopher Bond (R-Mo.) to refine Amtrak's mission statement; a provision by Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colo.) directing Amtrak to develop a plan to minimize federal subsidies; and a provision by Sen. Bernard Sanders (I-Vt.) that would encourage fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly rail equipment.
