FEMA back in charge of emergency response under new plan.(Federal Emergency Management Agency)(Post-Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act)

Lawmakers and state and local officials welcomed a new federal plan outlining coordinated intergovernmental response to emergencies with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) at the helm as a good first step toward correcting the problems exposed by the federal response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) said the plan "appears to be a solid building block," emphasizing that reauthorizing FEMA to take charge of national emergency response corrects a problem that will allow the agency to thrive as a part of the Homeland Security Department.
