AIR POLLUTION: IEA HOPES FOR PUBLIC-SPIRITED APPROACH TO CO2 EMISSION CUTS

Summary: A conference on voluntary approaches to reducing energy-related CO2 emissions was held by the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Bonn on October 30-31. Many OECD countries take a voluntary approach to CO2 reduction and the aim of the conference was to compare and contrast the various schemes, with an emphasis on their practical implementation.

Also strongly involved were the German Federal Ministry of the Environment, the Federal Economics Ministry and the European Commission.

Central to the conference was an IEA survey examining 250 voluntary programmes in 22 countries . The survey, the "first of its kind" according to the IEA, analyses the main features of the various programmes, and their effectiveness in achieving energy and environmental...
