TOYOTA LAUNCHES FIRST HYBRID CAR IN EUROPE.

The Japanese car manufacturer Toyota will be putting the first hybrid car in Europe, Prius, on the market in October. Prius is a "clean" car running on both petrol and electricity. Unlike conventional cars, Prius is unique in that it alternates between a petrol combustion engine and electricity since the electric engine runs off the energy produced by the combustion engine (stored in the battery).

Toyota is hoping to sell 5,000 of its new cars in 2001, an aim which James Rosenstein, one of Toyota's European marketing managers, has called "deliberately modest" since "it will take some time before people get used to the idea and decide to buy an ecological car".
