COMPETITION: REGIONAL AIRPORTS POINT UP KEY ROLE OF BUDGET AIRLINES IN REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

A few weeks shy of the European Commission decision on the legality of assistance paid by Belgium's Charleroi airport to the no-frills airline Ryanair, officials from European regional airports are urging the Commission to take into account their "essential role" in regional development. Officials from some 27 European regional airports (Dusseldorf, Strasbourg, Limoges, Bologna, etc.) met at a Brussels conference on January 8, convened by Wallonian Minister of the Economy Serge Kubla (whose portfolio covers the Ryanair case).
