VOLKSWAGEN CHALKS UP SLIGHTLY BETTER SALES.

Europe's biggest car maker, Volkswagen (VW) of Germany, reports a slight increase in sales last year, in line with the target, but its performance is still at a low ebb. This also applies to its range of luxury vehicles (Audi). The VW group's sales rose 1.3% world-wide to achieve 5.079 million units in 2004, according to a VW spokesman.
By way of comparison, the French rival PSA Peugeot Citroen, Europe's second leading car manufacturer, logged 2.7% more sales last year (3,375 million vehicles). Against the background of a depressed European market, the VW group's car deliveries grew by no more than 0.8% last year. Sales in Germany, its leading market, rose 1.2% to 954,000 vehicles.
