ARCELOR/THYSSENKRUPP TO JOINTLY DEVELOP NEW AUTOMOBILE STEEL.

Steel groups Arcelor and ThyssenKrupp announced on February 8 that they were joining forces in research and development (R&D). Both groups are seeking a technological breakthrough in highly resistant and highly formable flat carbon steels for the automobile industry. Signed on February 3, the agreement concerns the joint development of high manganese (TWIP/ Twinning Induced Plasticity) steels.

The new steel grades are to be used in the structural parts of car bodies such as body in white or chassis. With their combination of extremely high strength and superior formability the new steels aim to reduce weight by more than 20%.
