AIR TRANSPORT : COMMISSION CONCERNED BY FRAGMENTATION OF SINGLE EUROPEAN SKY.

Air traffic management needs to become more organised at European level and the key to this is integration of management across borders through functional airspace blocks. These should be based on operational requirements - in particular traffic flows - rather than existing national borders. This is what the European Commission highlighted in a report on the Single European Sky adopted on 16 March(1). It expresses its concerns about the progress made to date and fears that the results over the next two years will not be sufficiently robust and beneficial.aThe annual bill of the current fragmentation in the system is calculated to stand at around 1 billion in a 7 billion market, argues the Commission. It is thus calling for a change in procedure for European rules....
