ROAD SAFETY : GOALS LISTED IN WHITE PAPER "POSSIBLE TO REACH," SAYS BARROT.

The first European Road Safety Day on 27 April was an event that is destined to occur every year from now on, each time giving the European Commission the opportunity to assess efforts exerted to reach the goal elaborated in the 2001 White Paper on transportation: reduce by half the number of road fatalities between 2001 and 2010, and cut the total number of fatalities from nearly 50,000 to 25,000. This is "a goal which is possible to reach," indicated the Commissioner for Transportation, Jacques Barrot, since recent statistics available show that in 2006 nearly 12,000 lives were saved in the EU as compared to 2001.
