ROAD SAFETY : HEAVY LORRIES SAFER AS OF MARCH 2009.

The draft directive calling for anti-blind spot mirrors to be retrofitted' to heavy lorries currently in operation was expected to be approved late on 11 May in first-reading. A compromise has already been agreed upon between the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament, and was adopted at the 10 May plenary session in Brussels (report by Paolo Costa, ALDE, Italy). Under this draft directive, lorries registered since 1 January 2000 must be equipped with these new anti-blind spot mirrors at the latest by 31 March 2009. This schedule is half-way between what the Council initially wanted (later), and what the EP Transport Committee asked (earlier).
