The European Parliament adopted, on 11 December in Strasbourg, a report by Josu Ortuondo Larrea (ALDE, Spain) on the interoperability of the European railway system, which simplifies approval procedures for rail vehicles currently in force. The text was the subject of a prior agreement in the Council and should therefore be definitively adopted at the first reading stage of the co-decision procedure. It recasts and merges the current directives on interoperability (96/48/EC, 2001/16/EC, 2004/50/EC) and introduces a key principle: mutual recognition, which will put an end to the plethora of vehicle certification procedures which operators are currently subject to.
