MARITIME PIRACY : COMMISSION CALLS FOR COMBINED EFFORT FROM MEMBER STATES.

Faced with the repeated acts of maritime piracy, particularly off the coast of Somalia, cooperation between European countries on this issue should be reinforced. At least this is the wish of the European Commission in response to several questions from MEPs and journalists.

"Keeping the waters off the coast of Somalia safe cannot be guaranteed as required by the Somali authorities," explains a European Commission spokesperson. The problem of piracy is "serious": 17 attacks in the first half of 2007, against eight in the same period in 2006; a situation that the Commission "deplores".
