RAIL TRANSPORT : A STEP CLOSER TO INTEROPERABILITY.

A European Commission decision, of 23 April, brings Europe one step closer to a fully interoperable rail network. The EU executive adopted an amendment to the technical specifications of the European standard for train signalling and speed control (known as the ETCS, European Train Control System), one of the components of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS). This admittedly technical decision is nevertheless being presented as practically a turning point in the history of European rail. The ERTMS will in time replace the 20-odd national train signalling systems that exist in Europe today and that still oblige trains to stop at borders.
