A PAT ON THE BACK. Nonprofit organizations value their boards, according to a survey by Blackbaud, Inc., Charleston, South Carolina, and TechFoundation, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Sixty-nine percent of the 364 nonprofit organizations that participated in the online survey expressed confidence in their boards' strategic governance abilities. In addition, 70 percent believed their boards understood the importance of hiring and retaining talented staff.

MINDING THE BOARD. According to Korn Ferry's "29th Annual Board of Directors Study," corporate directors spent an average of 183 hours annually on board business in 2002, compared with 156 hours in 2001.
