Exempt applications at all-time high. The 2004 Internal Revenue Service's Advisory Committee on Tax-Exempt and Government Entities report disclosed that the number of exempt applications filed with the IRS reached an all-time high of 91,439 in 2003. There are now more than 1,640,949 exempt organizations in the United States and more than 964,418 of those have been granted 501(c)(3) status as either public charities or private foundations.
