Niche Categories Supplement Basic Commodities

Increasing demand, expanding niche opportunities and environmental concerns are boosting plumbing profits. While regional differences exist, buyers report steady sales gains with basic plumbing commodities, such as pipes and fittings.

Despite sluggish pricing, plumbing sales opportunities are growing, thanks to the decline of plumbing wholesale houses, says Len Bottom, Ace Hardware Corp.'s department manager of plumbing and electrical.

The absence of these specialty suppliers has left many contractors and commercial customers without stable sourcing. Do-it-yourself retailers who move quickly can and are winning this business in many parts of the country.
