Custom interior signage at Paul's Ace Hardware, Scottsdale, Ariz., lends a clean, upscale look to the store while giving a nod to the neighborhood's character.

Nearby Old Town Scottsdale is steeped in Southwest flavor, with covered sidewalks and adobe buildings. The signs at Paul's repeat the theme, bearing Old West lettering on a woodgrain-patterned background.

One foot is still firmly planted in the present. The letters are mirrored and raised to stand out and sparkle in the fluorescent light of the 17,500-square-foot store. The department signs bear gray-blue silhouettes of merchandise found there.
