2 new books trace Home Depot's history.(Brief Article)

Do-It-Yourself Retailing, June, 1999

About 200 people showed up at Bernie Marcus' book signing held in an Atlanta bookstore in April. Home Depot's chairman and co-founder autographed copies of his new book, "Built From Scratch," which he wrote with co-founder and CEO Arthur Blank.

The book focuses on how Home Depot was created and how it succeeded beyond anyone's dreams. A $1,200 investment in 100 Home Depot shares during the initial offering in 1981 would now be worth about $1.4 million.

Royalties from the book, which includes many anecdotes, will be donated to charities.

Another new book, "Inside Home Depot," has also just been released. It is written by Chris Roush, a journalist who spent many years covering the company.
