* What started as a few tables to display entry price-point hand tools has become a full-fledged 34-foot tool bay at Bob's Ace Hardware in Rockford, Ill.

On what is dubbed "Bob's Buys," customers can peruse tools on the shelves, bins and pegboard that occupy the 4-foot-wide customized gondola.

"A lot of people have a tool table, but we've made a statement with it and gone after it aggressively," says owner Janice Westlund. "It's nor for your contractor who needs tools to use on the jobsite but for somebody who needs tools they can use a couple of times."
