Uganda: Uganda's parliament is set to review the country's first National Biotechnology and Biosafety Policy, which was passed by the nation's cabinet on April 2. Along with granting cormnercialization rights to GM crops, if passed, the law could regulate medical diagnostics, industrial microbiology and biochemical engineering. However, the approval for research of GM crops has been granted, and research on Bt cotton is already underway. The Uganda National Council for Science and Technology created the policy with input from centers of higher education, legislators and industry. The parliament must review the law before it is passed--a process which is expected to take months.
