The Assn of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA) had both victories and defeats in the work of the 103rd US Congress. ATLA won big with the products liability bill. The ATLA Caucus organized grass-roots efforts for consumer protection across the country. These bore fruit in a Senate debate on tort reform, with senators decrying big business's efforts to restrict consumer rights and remedies for dangerous products. Although the health care reform attempt failed, ATLA worked hard and learned much that might help when the issue comes before Congress again.

I enjoy sausage but have never seen it made. Knowing the frequent comparison between sausage making and lawmaking, and having spent the better part of the last six months observing the final stage of the 103rd Congress, I hope...
