The results of the ABA's 1996 Small Law Firm Automation Survey show striking developments in small firms' use of computers. Nearly 85% now use at least one computer, with many using advanced processors and 77% planning to upgrade to them in 1996. The need for random-access memory soared while its cost plummeted, and larger hard disks are also now in use. Relatively few firms use litigation-support, case-management, and document-imaging software, and fewer use document-assembly programs. Internet use is up sharply.
