The Oryx initiative sponsored by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) has moved the healthcare industry's outcomes debate from talk to action. However, taking action requires an understanding of what constitutes valuable outcomes information. While generic health assessments and patient satisfaction surveys yield helpful data, neither provides information about illnesses suffered, the people who suffer them, and what clinical interventions successfully relieve them.
