The issues surrounding electro-convulsive therapy (ECT) are examined by risk-management analysts in "Electroconvulsive Therapy," a new report by ECRI. The report explores the numerous patient safety and risk-management issues for ECT providers to consider, including patient informed consent and education, adequate credentialing and training of the ECT team, and maintenance of ECT devices, equipment, and supplies. Some of the controversies surrounding ECT and examples of issues that have been raised in ECT malpractice cases are also addressed.
