Warding off the 'toxic boss': the apartment industry is often a breeding ground for ineffective bosses at all levels of management. It is important to remove 'toxic' managers as soon as they are identified.

During the late 1970s, the federal government, through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identified specific parcels of land its "EPA Superfund Sites." The superfund was created to test and research these highly toxic sites with the hope of eventually finding a way to detoxify them. More than 35 years later, many of these identified sites are still toxic. The federal government's process and the ensuing results form an interesting parallel to a recognized problem in the apartment industry.

Apartment professionals have identified a major operational problem in the industry: the "toxic boss" syndrome. A toxic boss is an individual in a position of authority who deals with human relations issues in a way that brings staff motivation to nil--in a hurry....
