BAA ownership safe for now

Following a six month investigation the UK's Monopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC) has recommended that BAA's management of London's Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted airports should not be broken up.

BAA's Chief Executive, Sir John Egan welcomed the MMC report on maintaining the BAA monopoly on London's three principal airports saying: 'This is essential both to realise the full capacity at our command and to enable the UK to remain competitive with major European hubs.'

The UK's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has also accepted the MMC's recommendations on future landing charges and has stipulated that landing charges for the five years from 1 April 1997 will be RPI-3 (3% below inflation) at Heathrow and Gatwick and RP 1 at Stansted. There will also be a...
