US August travel down 8.2%. (the Americas).(air travel passenger revenue miles fall)(Brief Article)

Airports International, October, 2002

The US Air Transport Association (ATA) reported that US revenue passenger miles (RPMs) declined 8.2 % during August as against August last year. Domestic RPMs dropped by 7.3% and international RPMs by 10.6%. Nationwide passenger enplanements fell by 10.2% in August, declining 10.7% domestically and 5.3% internationally.

"In traditionally its strongest growth month, US airlines made little progress toward economic recovery over the summer," stated ATA Chief Economist David Swierenga. "Lingering frustration with the airport security experience and a sluggish economy continues to contribute to stagnation in air travel growth."
