Transportation Industry
Authorities 'a threat'.(Brief Article)
Airports International, August, 2004
Canada's airport authorities are threatening the welfare of the country's airline industry, claims a study by Toronto York University economics professor Fred Lazar. It says the not-for-profit agencies which have been running airports since the early 1990s have become "unregulated and largely uncontrollable monopolies".
The study found that authorities have been levying user fees which were higher than necessary, and say they have become a disincentive to the efficient operation of the Canadian airline system, particularly as regards short-haul markets. (PF)
