EC concern over slot allocation neutrally.(International / Industry)(European Commission)

The European Commission (EC) has concerns about the neutrality and functional independence of the slot co-ordinator at airports in the EU. The statement was made in November 2007 as part of its assessment of the amended slot allocation regulation adopted in 2004.

The amendment was designed to ensure that scarce capacity at congested airports is managed and used as efficiently as possible, although there still is no generally accepted definition of 'efficient'. Three years on and following an evaluation that involved all stakeholders, the EC has concluded that "there have been improvements in the use of scarce airport capacity but there is still some room for improvement, especially where it concerns market access and efficient use of slots."
