Based on a promising start, North America's largest auto auction chains are expanding their certified used-vehicle programs.

Officials at ADT Automotive Inc., Adesa Corp. and Manheim Auctions Inc. say in-house certified programs introduced at some of their auctions earlier this year have boosted auction prices on used vehicles.

ADT, based in Nashville, Tenn., says some certified vehicles bring as much as $1,000 more at auction, while Atlanta-based Man-heim says there is as much as an eight-fold return on investment for consignors.

CERTIFIED EXPENSE

Typically, used-car dealerships certify vehicles at their own expense through a variety of programs offered by manufacturers and third-party companies.
