DETROIT - Ask cars.com about its financial health, and you'll hear the standard dot-com mantra:
It will finish the year in the red.
Its loss will be lower than in past years; the company is headed toward profitability.
Most of the competitors have flawed business models. ``You don't win this business having 13-year-old kids going on Yahoo! looking for Maseratis,'' Mitch Golub, the head of cars.com, said Monday, Jan. 15, during a roundtable discussion with Automotive News staff members. ``You've got to get consumers who are ready to buy.'' Cars.com is a division of Classified Ventures Inc., a Chicago operation owned by six multibillion-dollar media companies.
