The sale of EDS Corp.'s automotive retail unit to ADP Inc. adds about 900 stores to the 16,000 car and truck dealerships that already were ADP customers.

It was unclear, though, whether the purchase means that ADP now supplies more U.S. dealerships than computer business rival Reynolds and Reynolds Co. of Dayton, Ohio. ADP would say only that its number includes dealerships in the United States, Canada and Europe. Reynolds says it does business with more than 8,900 U.S. dealerships.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. But Sean Healy, a spokesman for EDS Automotive Retail Group of Troy, Mich., says the auto retail unit generated about $30 million in sales annually. The average U.S. new-car dealer spends about $71,000 annually on information...
