Bernd Bohr is mildly optimistic about growth this year for German supplier Robert Bosch GmbH and for the industry, although he remains cautious about the pace.

The prospects of Europe's largest automotive supplier depends on bringing new technology to market. As the management board member in charge of automotive for Bosch, Bohr, 47, discussed why demand from automakers is boosting Bosch's investment in r&d to nearly 10 percent of revenue.

Bohr spoke with Automotive News Europe Staff Reporter Edmund Chew about hybrids, diesels and promising technologies.

What is the outlook for 2004 for automotive markets and for Bosch?

Overall, our market prognosis for 2004 is still growth in automotive production of about 4 percent.
