Johan de Nysschen, 44, who more than doubled Audi sales in Japan, will become COO of Audi of America Inc. on Jan. 1.

De Nysschen will report to Axel Mees, head of Audi of America, and will oversee Audi's sales force in the field, dealer relations and dealership facility development.

His job is a new position at Audi of America, which is based in Auburn Hills, Mich.

De Nysschen became executive vice president and representative director of Audi Japan K.K. in 1999. He separated the Audi brand from Volks- wagen showrooms and set up an exclusive dealer network.

Audi sales rose in Japan from 6,429 in 1999 to 13,261 in 2003, while import sales in Japan were flat overall.
