Automotive engineering consulting firm Ricardo PLC is benefiting from the Chinese government's drive to bring new technology to the country.

Ricardo, of Shoreham-by-the-Sea, England, opens its China office on May 24 in Shanghai. But the company already has projects worth more than $9.4 million in China, says Stephen Clarke, Ricardo executive vice president in China.

"Already, our customers are asking us when we will have project managers in China,'' says Clarke, who heads the company's Shanghai office.

New-car sales in China grew 16 percent last year compared with 2003 to 2.4 million units, according to Automotive Resources Asia, a consulting firm in Shanghai. That was preceded by 70 percent annual growth in...
