Nippon Paint will purchase coatings unit

CHICAGO - Nippon Paint Co. Ltd. said it has reached an agreement to purchase most of Rohm and Haas Co.'s automotive coatings business.

Included in the purchase is the wholly owned Rohm and Haas business in North America and the company's share of the joint ventures it has with NPC. It does not include the company's European Automotive Coatings business.

Terms include about $230 million in cash, said a spokesman for Rohm and Haas NPC, of Osaka, Japan. The company supplies paint and coatings.
