UCS upgrade hits small dealers; Some stores resist call to buy server for new software.(Universal Computer Systems Inc)

Dealership management system vendor Universal Computer Systems Inc. is requiring smaller dealership customers to buy expensive new servers to handle an upcoming software upgrade.

UCS has been informing its customers that they will receive a major upgrade in January with many new features. But the new software won't run on older servers.

So Universal Computer Systems is requiring roughly half its dealerships to buy a new, UCS-supplied server to run the upgraded software, dealers and industry experts say. Some dealers aren't happy about it.

UCS, of Houston, says it has 750 dealership customers. A competitor that keeps a national database of dealerships and their current level of technology thinks that 460 to 480...
