Two major steel producers plan to create more automotive steel capacity in the southeastern United States.

Neither Nucor Corp. of Charlotte, N.C., nor Germany's ThyssenKrupp AG has said where their proposed new mills would operate. But both indicate they are preparing for new demand from Asian and European auto customers in North America.

Nucor has optioned industrial property outside Memphis, Tenn., for a mill that would produce high-grade "special bar quality'' steel. The mill would have capacity to produce 850,000 tons a year, according to a statement issued by Nucor.
