Ford Motor Co. and the Chrysler group introduced incentive programs last week, but they really could have spared themselves the work it took to prepare them.
A simple "Incentives on 2007 models will continue at the April level until further notice'' would have been sufficient.
There was a little fine-tuning. A rebate that had been $2,500 to $3,000 may now be $3,000 across the board. Several of the givebacks have been increased $500 - which was not unexpected at Ford Motor, in view of the company's 13 percent sales decline in April.
With payouts of $7,000, the Lincoln Town Car and Mercury Grand Marquis are at the top of the rebate list. The Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey bring the buyer $5,000.
