Sources: Fiat, Chery discuss joint venture
SHANGHAI - Fiat Auto S.p.A. is negotiating with Chery Automobile Co. to form a joint venture to build Fiat-brand cars for China, sources at both companies say. Chery already is studying the feasibility of manufacturing an Alfa Romeo sedan at its plant in Wuhu, a Chery manager says. Production would begin in 2009.
Chery also is studying the Fiat Linea sedan. That would be the first Fiat model the venture would assemble, sources say. In October, Chery agreed to supply 100,000 engines annually to Fiat's China operations.
Sergio Marchionne, CEO of the Fiat group, was in Beijing the week of May 28 seeking the Chinese government's permission to dissolve its partnership with Nanjing Auto.
