GM will sell Allison unit

DETROIT - General Motors last week agreed to sell its Allison Transmission commercial and military business to the private equity firms Carlyle Group and Onex Corp. for about $5.6 billion. The agreement encompasses seven manufacturing operations in Indianapolis and a worldwide sales and distribution network.

GM said it will keep a plant in Baltimore that makes conventional and hybrid two-mode transmissions used in its light trucks. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter.
