DETROIT - The UAW scheduled meetings here over the weekend for its Detroit 3 local presidents and leaders to discuss strike preparations. A union representative who asked not to be identified said the UAW planned to detail procedures for strike pay and other issues if a strike is called.

On Friday, UAW spokeswoman Christine Moroski confirmed that a "strike assistance conference'' was scheduled. The representatives were to meet Sunday and today, Aug. 6.

Late last month, the UAW began contract negotiations with the Detroit 3. Its four-year contract expires Sept. 14. The UAW has a strike fund of nearly $1 billion.
