The Q5 crossover will be Audi's third volume entry, the luxury brand's U.S. chief says.
The Q5 will go on sale early in the first quarter of 2009. Volume is expected to be in line with sales of Audi's other volume products: the A4 sedan and Q7 crossover, said Johan de Nysschen, Audi of America Inc. executive vice president.
That would put projected Q5 sales in the range of 24,000 to 40,000 vehicles annually.
"It will be positioned in a segment of the market that's growing quite rapidly: luxury and more compact SUVS and crossovers,'' de Nysschen said.
Audi is adding products as it strives to increase U.S. sales. Executives have said they want to sell 200,000 Audis in the United States by 2018.
